◇담수어
분포; 중국 및 아무르강 수계에 분포한다.
일반개요; 입이 크고 위턱이 눈의 뒤 가장자리 선까지 연장되어있다. 체고가 높고 좌우로 납작하며 등쪽에 융기선이 있다. 황색, 녹색, 브라운 갈색 등의 바탕색을 가지며 수많은 불규칙형 검은 반점들과 점들이 있다. 중국쏘가리는 강에서 살며 이들 강들은 비가오면 흙탕물로 흐려지며 강들이며 큰 수초가 많이 자라는 환경이다. 저서형이며 살아있는 다른 물고기들만 잡아먹는 특성을 가졌다. 알에서 부화하여 사냥을 시작할 때부터 다른 물고기의 아주 어린 살아있는 치어들만 잡아먹는다. 시각을 이용해 사냥감의 뒤를 추적해 가서 빠른 돌진으로 잡아먹는다. 사냥감 물고기들은 주행성 물고기들로 색상을 구별하고 시력이 좋지만 야간에는 이 기능이 발휘되지 못한다. 중국쏘가리는 어두운 환경을 이용하여 이 물고기들을 사냥한다. 중국 쏘가리는 궐어(鳜鱼)라고 부르며 한국에서와 같이 인기 높은 식용어이다. 중국의 시나 서적에 많이 등장한다. 양식된다.

※ 중국쏘가리(한국 쏘가리 포함)는 영명으로 만다린 피시(mandarin fish)라고도 부르는데 열대 해수어인 돛양태과(Callionymidae)의 mandarinfish(Synchiropus splendidus)와 혼동하지 말아야 한다.

◇Freshwater fish
Distribution: Asia: Amur River basin and China.
General: Big mouth, upper jaw extend trailing edge of eye. High body, side flat, backside with ridges. Its back is yellow, green, or brown, with many irregular black spots and patches. It is an inhabitant of rivers, some of which can become quite turbid in the rainy season. It is a specialized feeder on other fishes --as soon as they start feeding, they feed solely on fry of other fish species. Typical of stalking predators, they rely on vision for following the movement of prey before leaping forward and snapping at the victim. Prey consist mostly of diurnal fishes whose eyes have color vision and high acuity but cannot function at night. The habitat of the Chinese perch is usually rich in macrophytes and might be very turbid during rainy season. This species can reach 70 cm TL, and the greatest recorded weight for this species is 8 kg, max. reported age: 9 years. This species is a commercially important species and is also farmed. The mandarin fish is very popular as food in China. Its name (鳜鱼;궐어) appears in many Chinese poems and books. The Koreans organize fishing festivals in the end of April in Danyang City with the aim of catching large specimens of S. scherzeri, which is a close relative of S. chuatsi.

※Siniperca chuatsi, the mandarin fish or Chinese perch is not to be confused with “mandarinfish” in tropical seas of which scientific name is Synchiropus splendidus(Callionymidae).
